1-10. You Don't Always Get What You Want

"What happened? How did they react?" The Weasel leaned forward staring at the CO intently. "I hope the news is good?"

The CO stepped into the limo, saying "The brass determined that she was innocent and that her Uncle had no reason to be involved in the escapes."

They were parked in the same location as before, but this time the CO was casually dressed in blue jeans and a thick long sleeved cotton shirt under his parka. His vacation started that day and he planned to make the most of it with his new found wealth. He was desperately hoping that this guy wasn't going to be too upset about the way things turned out. He was counting on the extra cash.

"Idiots. Do they have to have things spelled out for them? She's a leftie and a liar why would they believe anything she had to say!" The Weasel cursed.

"If the escapees had been leftists or people associated with the leftists it would have been more believable." the CO stated nervously.

"Part of their investigation involved drugging her with sodium pentathol and hypnotizing her before interrogating her. There was a psychiatrist in charge. Everyone agreed that her responses were credible and truthful. They interspersed a lot of test questions, questions that they already knew the answers to in order to test her responses."

"The good news is, the letter from Greg terrified her. The bad news is, the other prisoners found out what he did because he started bragging that he was going to rape her when he got released. They beat him up pretty badly. There are indications in the rumor mill that her Uncle may have had something to do with organizing the beating but the brass haven't been able to prove it. There was a motive there and it wouldn't have been hard to bribe a few of the prisoners to do the job for them. On the other hand, the prisoners tended to like her. She treated them and everyone else well. The brass recognizes that it's also possible the prisoners may have decided to beat him up on their own simply because they thought she was a nice girl."

"Too bad Greg didn't get a chance to rape the bitch. I understand his previous rapes were pretty brutal." The Weasel snickered, picturing the act in his mind, with pleasure.

"Well if we hadn't suggested he send the letter, he might have had the chance. The letter gave her Uncle the opportunity to intervene and prevent that from happening."

"Here's the rest of your payment. Tell Greg to contact me when he gets released. I've arranged, through certain contacts of mine, that he be released in a couple of weeks instead of having to wait until the end of the year."

"Oh, and by the way, a friend of mind needs a Head of Security for his company. The money and hours are good. Interested?"

I don't believe this, thought the CO to himself.

Do I want to get more involved with this guy? He's a weird one. Why is he offering so much money and favors to go after this girl? She's just a kid. What could she possibly have done to him.

He had been very careful to use the word "they" when he referred to Rani as a nice girl because he didn't want to set this man off. However, he had taken some time to get to know her and she was a nice girl. He couldn't imagine her doing anything to this guy that would justify this kind of malicious retaliation. Her uncle wouldn't have had to bribe anyone to beat Greg up, he had provoked several prisoners, and everyone liked Rani. They would have beaten him up, paid or not. Payment would just have been icing on the cake for these guys.

On the other hand, his wife and kids were complaining about the constant disruption shift work caused the family. He was also getting tired of it and the constant danger associated with handling hard-core criminals day in and day out. A well-paid, safer job, with steady hours was pretty tempting.

"I'd like to talk to my wife first, and then get back to you after our vacation, if that's okay with you." the CO responded.

"Fine, but don't take too long to decide. There are plenty of other people who would jump on this opportunity."

The CO could hear that edge in the The Weasel's voice again. Did he dare refuse the offer? How would this guy respond?

"I'll get back to you as soon as possible." He said quietly as he stepped out of the car, now wishing he'd never gotten involved.
